Jim
Cook is a contemporary artist whose passion for nature and all
its wonders is vividly demonstrated in his art. His medium of
choice is watercolour; he feels that the transparency obtained
from this medium best captures the elusive changing skies and
scenery of Ontario.
Born and still living in
Sudbury, Ontario, Jim did not launch his painting career until
after his retirement as a secondary schoolteacher. He has taken
part in workshops and seminars in both Canada and the United
States from people he has admired over the years: Brian Ateyo,
Bob Little, Morton Solberg, Zoltan Szabo, Richard Edwards, Barry
Bowerman, and the late Orest Andrews. These artists have been
most instrumental in influencing his art. Also a renown wood-carver,
Jim has been working in this medium for over thirty years, and
daily teaches this skill to over twenty-five people.
Jim paints the wildlife
he has observed for many years as a canoeist dog trainer, trapper
and all-round outdoor enthusiast. His paintings reflect his love
of wildlife and its natural habitat and elicit in the viewer
a sense, of personal communication with the subject. Painting
the animals, birds and scenery of our land provides a great emotional
outlet for Jim. I feel very strongly about conservation of our
wildlife and its habits and 1 hope my paintings will instill
some of that concern in the people who view my Art", says
the artist.
Jim has participated in
many juried and small group shows throughout Northern Ontario
and has won many awards. His paintings and carvings are in private
collections throughout the world. He is a member of the Sudbury
Art Club, the Sudbury Arts and Crafts Foundation, and the Sudbury
Carving Club. |
